At 1800 Salvage, we pride ourselves on delivering a reliable, streamlined car-buying service. Beyond creating value and convenience, we also emphasise providing a secure platform for customers to sell their vehicles. This is achieved by maintaining transparent and open communications, allowing users to make an informed choice about who they’re selling their vehicle to.
We spoke with Leigh-Ann Ayton, our National Automotive Buyer and Accounts Officer, to discuss her role and our responsibilities as a licensed motor car trader.

How long have you worked with 1800 Salvage?
I began working with 1800 Salvage in 2019 as a part-time employee, and I moved into a full-time role in 2022.
What does your role involve?
For many years, I was responsible for all the accounts and preparation of financial reporting within the business. I have also worked as a Buyers’ Assistant. Within this, I helped verify contracts with customers and arranged towing collections alongside other bits and pieces that the role required. More recently, I entered a National Buyer position, which was initially challenging but incredibly rewarding. This includes liaising with customers and building rapport while handling the final sale.
Can you speak about your experience in the automotive industry?
I began working in the automotive industry in 1990, providing customer support and training to the customer base. In 1993, I founded my IT support company, where we looked after many of the major automotive part suppliers across the eastern seaboard of Australia. I also have experience working with licensed motor car traders in many different capacities.
What is a licensed motor car trader (LMCT)?
A licensed motor car trader is authorised to buy and sell used motor vehicles within Australia. This applies to dealing in used cars, motorcycles, as well as commercial and heavy vehicles. An LMCT is required to adhere to strict rules, regulations and processes regarding advertising and pricing. They must also follow guidelines that address the storage of customer information and records to meet the outlined security requirements.

Why is it important to sell with a licensed motor car trader like 1800 Salvage?
Selling with our business guarantees complete protection and compliance with government-developed LMCT regulations, meaning we communicate transparently throughout the entire sales process. From offer acceptance and Contract of Sale to tow collection and payment, you can count on us to be responsive and alert from the beginning. Choosing 1800 Salvage as your preferred LMCT also means you’ll enjoy a quick and efficient process, as our expert buyers use their extensive knowledge to simplify your sale.
Most importantly, 1800 Salvage offers peace of mind when selling your car. With private online sales rising in popularity, it’s essential to consider the associated risks. From PayID scams to buyers “test driving” your vehicle and not returning it, this method of sale does not guarantee a secure transaction. Selling with a non-licensed car buyer can also have its own issues. A buyer may offer a price over the phone sight unseen, to later reduce their quote by a large percentage when they inspect in person. Choosing an LMCT such as 1800 Salvage removes all associated buying risk, allowing you to focus on more important things.
How do you safely store customer information?
1800 Salvage’s customer data is stored within industry-leading technology that guarantees premium security and privacy. Access to sensitive information is only available internally and is supported by two-factor authentication technology.
How does 1800 Salvage differ from private buyers?
Our nationwide service is linear and direct. We begin with a firm, no-obligation purchase offer based on recent auction results valid for 14 days, allowing customers to do their own research. From there, our fast and straightforward digital Contract of Sale lets customers organise their sales within minutes. A timely towing appointment is arranged, with an instant cash payment via Osko pre-loaded before pickup. Once the vehicle is verified, funds are deposited, and the car is removed. We also purchase in as-is condition, meaning there’s no need to haggle or negotiate for a better price. Our extensive automotive experience means we accept every vehicle type, from trucks to light machinery. If you want it gone, we’re more than happy to make an offer.
